If you’d like to keep scripture memory as a part of your home, here are a few more ideas to keep the word fresh and fun. Many of these also work well in a classroom or Sunday school setting.
Memorize with Music
This is one of the most fun and natural ways to help our children memorize. Albums like Steve Green’s, Hide ‘Em in Your Heart or anything from the Seed’s Family Worship Collection are excellent and will have your kids memorizing scripture while they’re bouncing around the room cleaning up.
For full passages, our absolute FAVORITE album is Every Last Word. Haven’t Heard of these guys? Do yourself and your family a favor, find them on Amazon Prime Music, and start listening … my 5-year-old memorized about 4-5 chapters of scripture because of these guys. Slugs and Bugs is newer to us, but we’re quickly falling in love with them also, especially when you start singing about Aliens, and realize you’re memorizing a Bible verse at the same time. These guys know how to make memorizing FUN!
Memorize with Movement
- Write each word of a verse on an index card or piece of paper. Scatter the cards around the room. Ask the kids to jump from word to word to in the correct order of the verse.
- Write the words of the verse you’re trying to memorize in chalk all over your driveway. Have your children pogo stick, hopscotch, or just jump from word to word in order of the verse. Depending on the space you have, you could also use bikes or scooters too.
- At the basketball hoop, instead of HORSE or PIG, try Philippians 4:6a, “do not be anxious for anything” ….”I’ve got a “Do” “I’ve got a “Do Not”
Memorize by Removing Words
Write each word from the verse on an index card. Recite the verse out loud together. Remove several words and recite it aloud together again. Keep removing words until the whole verse can be recited without any cards.
Incorporate Memory into your Dinner (or breakfast or lunch) Routine
Attach 10 popsicle sticks together with tape, accordion-style. After the sticks are taped together, write a few words from the verse on each stick with a permanent marker. Place the popsicle stick accordions into a jar on your kitchen table. Take the jar out at mealtime and quiz each other. If someone gets stuck, read a few of the words listed on the first popsicle stick to help. (This could be simplified to be written on paper or index cards and left on the table. Something about the popsicle sticks seemed to make it more fun for our children)
Memorize with Writing
Our new Write the Word on my Heart Bible Memorization Curriculum makes memorization simple. WTWOMH uses primarily copywork, removing a few words each day to help parents and children memorize one verse each week. It also uses coloring sheets, verse puzzles, and memory review cards. Just open, and go. 30 weeks, 30 verses, 5-10 minutes per day. This curriculum is designed to help parents and children memorize the word together, giving parents a useful tool to begin to “write the word” on the hearts of their children.

Memorize with (your own) Songs
If you’re musically inclined, try setting a verse to music. Try to keep it exact.
Memorize with (your own) Art
If you’re artistically inclined, keep a scripture art journal where you write out verses using different fonts and pictures.
Or Write the words (or first letter of each word) in the verse on paper. Cut the words apart, take turns scrambling them, and then putting them in order again. Or glue them onto a new paper in order.
